Abidal appeal dismissed

The Spanish Federation has dismissed Barca’s appeal for the red card Eric Abidal picked up on Sunday in the game against Villarreal to be withdrawn. The club will now proceed to take the case to the Appeals Committee.

The RFEF confirmed the one-game suspension handed out to Abidal, which will mean he misses out on this Wednesday’s Spanish Cup Final, but the club have taken the case to the Appeals Committee of the Federation who will consider the case and come to a decision this evening.

Abidal picked up the straight red card in the 77th minute on Sunday when the ref adjudged he’d given away a penalty.

Guardiola: “All the Chelsea team are a danger”

Barca boss Josep Guardiola was full of praise for rivals Chelsea at this evening’s pre-match press conference, but he insisted his team would attack, look to control possession and go for goals.

Guardiola warned: “all the Chelsea team are a danger. They can play in many different ways and they are tactically very flexible. Full squad on Thursday

As the week goes by Barça’s internationals will be coming back. If all goes well the full squad will be together for Thursday evening’s session at 6 pm at the Ciudad Deportiva. There is also a session scheduled for 11 am on Wednesday.

To Valladolid on Saturday

The team is to travel to Valladolid on matchday, which means Guardiola will only have two sessions with his entire squad on Thursday and then on Friday at 11 am before the game. The flight to Valladolid is scheduled for 11 am.

Champions League quarterfinal draw on 20th March

Apart from Barça, the following teams will go into the hat for the CL quarterfinal draw on Friday 20th March: Liverpool, Chelsea, Villarreal, Bayern Munich, Porto, Arsenal and Manchester United.

There will be no restrictions on the possible pairings and the order of the games is yet to be decided. The pairings for the semifinals will also be decided.

A busy month

Both legs of the quarterfinals will be played in April while the semis will take place on 28th and 29th April (first leg) and 5th and 6th May. The final will be held in the Olympic stadium in Rome on 27th May.

Puyol ruled out for ten days

Carles Puyol has been ruled out of action for ten days after suffering a blow to his left leg during the Copa del Rey, quarter final first leg on Thursday evening in Camp Nou against Espanyol.

The Blaugrana captain limped out of the game and underwent a series of tests to determine what damage he had suffered and how long he would be out for. The club’s medical services revealed that the exams, that took place in Hospital de Barcelona, showed that he suffered “a small muscle tear to the back of his left thigh”.

Doctors also explained that Puyol would now be out of action for “around ten days”. The Barça skipper asked to be replaced on the hour mark during the Copa del Rey game against Espanyol and was replaced by Martín Cáceres

FC Barcelona doctor Ricard Pruna explained that the injury to Puyol was “was not that bad”, but explained that they would be careful and take “every precaution”. He continued by saying that “considering we are in the middle of the season any injury could leave you sidelined for a long time”

Ronald Koeman will always be remembered for scoring the winning goal in the 1992 European Cup Final at Wembley. For those lucky enough to see him play regularly in his six seasons at Camp Nou, there are many other great memories. Koeman was a great leader who led Barça from the back. Playing in the middle of a three-man defence was never going to be easy for a player who was not so fast, but Koeman made up for it with good positioning and a quick mind.

He moved to Barça from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of approximately 1,000 million pesetas (€6million) in the summer of 1989. He had already won the European Cup with PSV in 1988. Johan Cruyff originally wanted him to play just in front of the defence, but the rise of a youngster called Josep Guardiola made Cruyff put Koeman in defence.

Koeman was strong in the tackle and he had to be, due to his lack of speed he knew he couldn’t catch many players if they got past him. However, his main strengths were when he had the ball. Koeman had tremendous vision and a pinpoint pass, his 40-metre crossfield passes to Txiki Begiristain or Hristo Stoichkov gave Barça more attacking options. He was also very cool on the ball, it didn’t matter if an opponent was pressurizing him, he nearly always managed to bring the ball out and find a team mate.

One of the most distinctive elements of FC Barcelona are the colours the players wear.
Scarlet and blue have featured on the club shirt for more than one hundred years and the club is widely known as the ‘Blaugrana’ in reference to the names of these colours in the Catalan language. However, although the shirt has remained relatively constant in design over the years, the team shorts were white for the first ten years of club history, then switched to black, and were only blue from the 1920s onwards.

Nut just why Barça originally chose to wear these shirt colours has been matter of much debate among club historians, and although several theories have been put forward, nobody has ever managed to provide substantial evidence that the colours were chosen for any symbolic reason. Naturally, most of the theories are related to the foundation and origins of the club. For instance, it was claimed for several years that the Barça colours were adopted from a Swiss club that Gamper had founded earlier in his life, or that they were the colours of the Swiss canton that the founder was from. We now know that these hypotheses are highly unlikely to be true.
There is another common but unproven theory that the founders based their choice on the colours of the blue and red accountancy pencils that were so popular at the time. And there are other more prosaic suggestions, for instance the one which maintains that the mother of the Comamala brothers supplied the players with red and blue sashes so that they could differentiate between each other in the days before they had a kit of their own.
